Gusar region was established in 1930. In 1934, the centre of the region was relocated to Gusar, and since 1938 it has been granted a city status. It is located 165 km from Baku. The Gusar region is called Azerbaijan's "North Gate" for its geographical position.

- Shahdag Mountain Resort. Shahdag is the largest ski resort in Azerbaijan. It is located in the Caucasus Mountains, namely at the foot of the mountain Shahdag, one of the peaks of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The height of the mountain Shahdag, which serves as the basis of the ski resort, is 4,285 meters. On this mountain, there are 19 kilometers of tracks for visitors to the Shahdag resort. The village is populated by ethnic Lezgins -- a distinctive hospitable people, the ancestors of Leahy, whose history is linked to the Caucasian Albania - one of the oldest states in the territory of Azerbaijan. The villagers live a normal life of mountainous settlements: conduct housekeeping, hold birds, large and small livestock.
